Babymooning

June 9, 2017

What is a babymoon? A babymoon is a vacation that mommy and daddy to-be take before their first baby arrives. This trip can be taken at any point in the pregnancy but it is generally done in the second trimester when flying is considered safest for mother and child by many physicians.

According to the Macmillan Dictionary the expression babymoon was coined in the early 1990s by pregnancy and childbirth author Sheila Kitzinger, who described it as a calm, uninterrupted period of time needed by parents after the birth of a baby so that they could spend time bonding with their new arrival. However, babymooning as a travel trend gained popularity in the early 2000s and is still a very popular trend today.

Once you have decided that you want to take a babymoon, the next step is the hardest part- deciding where you want to go. The options are pretty much endless provided the mom-to-be is healthy. Of course, you wouldnโ€™t want to plan a skydiving/bungee jumping trip or a scuba diving trip, but there are several options to consider such as:

– A relaxing stay at a spa complete with prenatal massages (yes, dads to-be, prenatal massages do exist)

– An exotic getaway to the Caribbean with quiet walks on the beach at sunset

– A week of romance in some gorgeous city in Europe such as Rome, Crete or Budapest.

– A cruise with an all you can eat buffet (theyโ€™ll totally have pickles and ice cream or whatever you are craving)

Whatever trip you choose, be sure to clear it with your doctor first. The health of mom and baby come first!
